Shoulder Injuries and Slipped Disc

Lilian Lam, 43, Sales Director

What brings you to Pilates?

I’m ardent fan of fitness, always seeking thrill and variety in all forms. But I guess age is not in favour and I had a couple of injuries from shoulder and slipped disc and that brought me to rehabilitation pilates for the last 2 years. I haven’t stopped since and it’s a perfect complement to my current fitness regimen in strength training and pole dancing.

How has it helped you?

I learnt how to correct my posture and engage the right muscle groups that have been so neglected and wrongly aligned during my other forms of exercises.

What would you tell others about your experiences?

Pilates is for every age and for everyone. You can still have a good sweaty workout with every session! But most importantly, engage a professional personal instructor if you are unsure where to start. I’m glad to have come to UrbanElite Pilates where they have professional instructors that are very detailed and patient in breaking it all down for me to understand my body better. Highly recommended!

Knee Surgery

Dana Tan, 41, Manager

What brings you to Pilates?

I had a constant discomfort and pain in my right knee for years after a minor surgery. I’ve had physiotherapy but it did little to help. Therefore, I was searching for a way to rehabilitate, and to make sure I could remain mobile into my older years.

How has it helped you?

Firstly, Pilates has taught me a lot about how the body moves, and that explains so much about why we ache in certain areas and how to help ourselves as we move around in our daily lives. The teacher in UrbanElite has helped me to activate and train the right muscles and my core to resolve not just my knee problem, but other affected areas as well. The biggest impact for me is knowing that my knee issue was not going to be a lifelong problem! Within 4 sessions, I no longer felt the discomfort and was equipped with the right knowledge of how to move about normally.

What would you tell others about your experiences?

It’s very important to find the right Pilates instructor. UrbanElite’s instructors are not only knowledgeable and happy to share knowledge, they are like a partner who cares about your well-being and makes sure you will improve from practicing Pilates.

Knee Fractured and Sacral Fractured

Sook Ling, 49, Director

What brings you to Pilates?

I broke my knee cap during a fall 10 years ago and consulted an Orthopaedic for it.  It was he who suggested that I take up Pilates for rehab and at the same time strengthen my back which also suffered a sacral fracture previously.  He shared with me the benefits of Pilates and also told me that it is something I can do till a ripe old age given that it is a low impact sport.

How has it helped you?

I felt the difference in my body just after 5 lessons, and here I am in my 9th year! I have learnt a lot about my body during this time, become more conscious of areas of weakness and imbalance that I have to continue working on. and slowly but surely built strength without the bulk.

What would you tell others about your experiences?

That Pilates may look easy but it is far from that. Patience and perseverance are required, and you will see that pay off in time. Learn to invest in your own body.
